As parents or caregivers you may have many concerns about the possibility of violence occurring to your children. To keep open lines of communication and really understand what may be going on with regard to your children, remember a few key points when interacting with suspected child victims of abuse:
- A child is not likely to make up stories of sexual abuse. In fact, many children will deny that the abuse did happen, either out of fear or ignorance. Therefore, re-assure your child and believe him or her.
- If the child has difficulty to describe in words what happened, ask the child to draw pictures or demonstrate using dolls
- Seek support for yourself; talk to someone who might be able to help you
- Report the matter to the police or to the Child Protection Service.
- Do not worry about publicity. The child's identity would be protected from media coverage.
