If you find yourself in an abusive relationship, you must make plans to keep yourself safe. The following are some tips on how to do it:
- Tell your parents, a friend, a counsellor, or someone whom you trust and who can help. The more isolated you are from others, the more control your partner has over you.
- Keep a record of the abuse. It might be helpful as evidence.
- Do not meet your partner alone.
- Avoid the lonely places where you are likely to meet him/her. You will be safer if there is a crowd.
- Tell a friend, a family member or someone you trust where you are going and when you plan to be back.
- Plan what to do if your partner becomes abusive.
- Create a code word or signal to let friends know you are in danger.
- Keep a list of important phone numbers (e.g. Police, SOS, friend) with you at all times - memorise the important ones.
- If you are in danger, do not hesitate to call Police 999.
