There are many ways to control your aggression. To get started, there are a few simple steps that you need to be aware of and follow. Remember to do this plan when you are calm, cool and collected, and there is no desire or opportunity to become aggressive at that time:
- Be aware of your red flags. Do not ignore the warning signs - these are the best times to step back from aggressive feelings. Being aware of the warning signs will help you to monitor your own behaviour so that you can consciously make alternative choices to violence.
- Identify the source of your anger. Why are you angry? Deal with the situation or problem that triggers your anger/ unhappiness.
- If you cannot deal with a potentially explosive situation at that moment, walk away, leave the house and take time-out.
- Take deep breaths and count to ten slowly or take a walk. Going away from the situation can cool you down and give you time to think about alternative ways to resolve the conflict.
- Talk to someone. It will make you feel better, or help you find a solution to your problem.
- Do not drink alcohol or use drugs. They cause you to lose your self-control.
- Seek help from a counsellor.
